Well, I never was very good at writing headlines…let’s hope I’m better at fantasy novels, or this radical redesign of my website will have been for nothing!
Any of you who are familiar with this website (and to be honest, it should be damn few, since it’s served as nothing more than an online resumé for years after I’ve needed it) will be wondering what’s up with the awesome art and the Amazon links now festooning this thing.
Well, Gentle Reader, georgehatt.com is now my author’s blog and the online home for my first book, Kingshelm, the first installment of the Renegade Druid Cycle.
Now, then. That’s out of the way, so let’s proceed with some worthwhile independent author blogging.
I have several missions I’d like to accomplish here. One, I think, is to document the path of the indie fantasy/sci-fi author from the beginning. It’s one thing for aspiring writers to look at a gazillionaire like Hugh Howie and think, “Well, hell, I can do that!”
Or worse, “Man, I’ll never be able to do that…”
(Full disclosure: Hugh Howie was my inspiration to go indy with Kingshelm. And both of those thoughts are direct quotes from me at various points throughout the process. Often on the same day.)
So I will post my thoughts and hard-bitten experiences as they occur. Watch, and wince, from the very start as I do this whole indy author thing. Who the hell knows where this will go? But whether I succeed or fail, I hope there’s something in my experiences for other aspiring indies to learn.
Other blog posts, I suspect, will deal with religion and spirituality and how they intertwine with creativity. I draw inspiration for my writing and my spiritual practices from the same inner well. Which raises the question, Does that mean that religion is just a big exercise in fantasy? Or do the True and Living Gods ™ take shape in our imaginations to speak to us and impart Their unutterable Wisdom?
Well, if I knew that, I’d be some kind of pagan Joel Osteen making obscene amounts of money doling this wisdom out in friendly, manageable (and marketable) portions in some mega-church. And I wouldn’t have time to write fantasy.
I’ll also write about home brewing in this blog. Again, as a public service.
